Gasparilla Invades Tampa This Weekend, Law Enforcement Cracking Down on DUI

Tonight and this weekend, the Gasparilla celebration once again invades the city of Tampa, and along with the revelers, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office will be out in full force looking for drunk drivers.

Gasparilla events include the “Gasparilla Invasion,” the Gasparilla Invasion Brunch,” and the “Parade Fest Street Festival” along with live music, food, costumes and partying.  And drinking.   Drinking has become synonymous with the Gasparilla festivities and it seems everyone participating imbibes on the ‘liquid pirate booty.’   In response to the partying, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office seeks to protect those people on the roads through Hillsborough County and will be conducting “Operation 3D,” a public awareness campaign meaning Don’t Drink & Drive.”  …

Tampa DUI Checkpoint Tonight(12/30/2011) in Temple Terrace, Hillsborough County

On the eve of New Year’s Eve, Temple Terrace police department seeks to lock up  drunk drivers.  To do so, authorities with the police department will stage a DUI checkpoint on Friday, December 30, 2011 from midnight to 4 AM in the area of 56thStreet and Whiteway Drive (http://goo.gl/A6gAW)

Authorities in Temple Terrace will participate in the checkpoint because “The Temple Terrace Police Department recognizes that DUI is a serious public safety problem and that Hillsborough County has consistently ranked among the top counties in the state for alcohol related crashes,” according to spokesperson Michael Dunn.    The police department seeks to conduct the high visibility checkpoint to make the public aware that drunk drivers will be arrested.…

Crime Down And Arrests Up At USF Campus In Tampa Partly Due To DUI Patrol

The Tampa campus of the University of South Florida has become safer since 2005 according to new crime figures published in the St. Petersburg Times. According to officials serious crime is down over 30% while arrests are up 23%. Police credit some highly visible programs for helping see numbers trend in the right direction. One of those programs involves a strong DUI presence.

Since 2006 the USF police department has conducted DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols. This is something that had never been done previously. They also are patrolling the areas around the University of South Florida looking for DUI offenders on the streets around the Tampa campus.…
