The Tampa campus of the University of South Florida has become safer since 2005 according to new crime figures published in the St. Petersburg Times. According to officials serious crime is down over 30% while arrests are up 23%. Police credit some highly visible programs for helping see numbers trend in the right direction. One of those programs involves a strong DUI presence.
Since 2006 the USF police department has conducted DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols. This is something that had never been done previously. They also are patrolling the areas around the University of South Florida looking for DUI offenders on the streets around the Tampa campus. The department believes this has raised awareness of the department and hopefully stemmed people from coming onto the USF campus to commit crimes.
