A group of Tampa high school students getting ready for prom night got a lesson in what a Tampa DUI looks like up close. A drunk driving accident was staged for Gaither High School students in hopes of scaring the group enough that they will consider not drinking and driving on prom night Saturday.
The presentation featured the jaws of life, field sobriety tests, a Bayflight helicopter, two smashed cars and a 20-year-old DUI manslaughter convict who told the high school students his story how he killed his own brother in a drunk driving accident when he was just 18-years-old, the same age as many of the high school students watching the DUI presentation.
Brian Rushing spent nine months in jail on a 14 1/2 –year prison sentence for the DUI accident that killed his brother. He will never be allowed to drive again and he will also spend the next decade on probation. Rushing attended Land O’Lakes high school and graduated in 2007. His story reached many of the students on an emotional level and he talked to many of the Gaither High students personally at the end of the presentation.
